Dezvoltarea moderna a orasului Mangalia incepe dupa 1955, in mai multe etape: 1957-1961 constructia "centrului civic"" (care cuprindea pe atunci cateva blocuri, o casa de cultura si un cazino), dupa 1965- constructia noilor si modernelor statiuni turistice Saturn-Jupiter-Neptun-Saturn-Cap Aurora, si dupa 1974- extinderea santierului naval si constructia portului comercial.
